Since I sold my TZ30 to fund the purchase of the TZ40 I had suspicions that the image quality of the TZ30 was slightly superior to that of the newer camera. A new wave of offers tempted me to purchase another TZ30 and thus I was able to run a series of tests to compare the results from both cameras. The shooting was done with exactly the same setting on both cameras and the video clips were taken simultaneously where this was practical. I tried to include a variety of image types to compare and different levels of lighting. I leave the final choice to you but my own opinion would seem to back up my initial thoughts on images with iso values of 400 or less. Beyond this the TZ40 does appear to control noise better, thus giving images which do appear to be sharper and have held the saturation better.
